കോട്ടയം: പാലാ നഗരസഭ ഉപാധ്യക്ഷ തിരഞ്ഞെടുപ്പിൽ കോൺഗ്രസ് വിമതൻ ബിജു മാത്യൂസിന് വിജയം. എൽഡിഎഫിന്റെ പിന്തുണയോടെയാണ് ബിജുവിന്റെ വിജയം. യു‍ഡിഎഫ് പാർലമെന്ററി പാർട്ടി ലീ‍‍‍ഡർ കോൺഗ്രസിലെ സെബാസ്റ്റ്യൻ പനയ്ക്കലിനെയാണ് ബിജു പരാജയപ്പെടുത്തിയത്.

26 അംഗ നഗരസഭയിൽ ബിജു മാത്യൂസിന് 14 വോട്ടും സെബാസ്റ്റ്യൻ പനയ്ക്കലിന് 11 വോട്ടും ലഭിച്ചു. ഇടതു മുന്നണിയിലെ ടോണി തൈപ്പറമ്പിൽ യുഡിഎഫിന് വോട്ടു ചെയ്തു.

ബിജു മാത്യൂസും ടോണി തൈപ്പറമ്പിലും ഉപാധ്യക്ഷ സ്ഥാനാർഥിയാകാൻ അവകാശവാദം ഉന്നയിച്ചിരുന്നെങ്കിലും നഗരസഭാധ്യക്ഷ മായാ രാഹുലും വിമത അംഗം രജിത പ്രകാശും ബിജുവിനെ പിന്തുണച്ചു.

തുടർന്ന് ടോണിയെ അനുനയിപ്പിക്കാൻ നേതൃത്വം ശ്രമിച്ചെങ്കിലും സാധിച്ചില്ല. ഇടതിനെ പിന്തുണച്ചിരുന്ന ലിസിക്കുട്ടി മാത്യുവും യുഡിഎഫിന് വോട്ടുചെയ്തു. രജിത പ്രകാശ് വോട്ടെടുപ്പിന് എത്തിയില്ല.

രാവിലെ 11നായിരുന്നു തിരഞ്ഞെടുപ്പ്. കേരള കോൺഗ്രസ് (എം) –10, സിപിഎം– 2, സ്വതന്ത്ര അംഗം മായ രാഹുൽ, കോൺഗ്രസ് വിമതർ–3 എന്നിങ്ങനെയാണ് ഇടതിന്റെ അംഗബലം. ടോണി തൈപ്പറമ്പിലും ലിസിക്കുട്ടിയും യുഡിഎഫിനെ പിന്തുണച്ചിട്ടും കേവലഭൂരിപക്ഷത്തിനു 14 പേരുടെ പിന്തുണ മതി എന്നതിനാൽ ബിജു വിജയിച്ചു.

കോൺഗ്രസ് –2, കേരള കോൺഗ്രസ്–3, സ്വതന്ത്ര മുന്നണി–3, കെഡിപി–1 എന്നിങ്ങനെ 9 അംഗങ്ങളാണ് യുഡിഎഫിന്. ഒരു കോൺഗ്രസ് വിമതഅംഗം യുഡിഎഫിനെ പിന്തുണയ്ക്കുന്നു.
